Start the Adventure! The Scout Section is for boys and girls aged 11½ to 14. Here at 1st Pontefract Scouts (1PSC) you have the choice of two exciting scout nights to choose from. Tuesdays 19:30 to 21:00 or Wednesday 19:30 to 21:00 Both Scout nights offer a full and varied scout programme and offer local young people the chance to move beyond their normal boundaries of perhaps the xbox and TV. Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities which have various cost implications as part of the scout programme. "Participation" rather than meeting set standards is the key approach. Scouts who want to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenges Awards and Activity Badges they can take. Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them to find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit and helps develop their creative talents. It also provides opportunities to explore their own values and personal attitudes towards themselves and others Being outdoors is important and half the Programme is given over to taking part in both the traditional Scout skills, such as camping, survival camps, cooking on open fires, as well as the wide range of adventurous activities, such as abseiling, climbing, caving hiking, to yachting. When possible we encourage all Scouts to gain national qualifications in most of the activities we run such as BCU for kayaking and canoeing and RYA courses for sailing. The international opportunities we offer to our Scouts here at 1PSC is well known in the area as well nationally. We mainly travel to European countries such as France, Spain, Germany or Austria. None European camps can be anywhere such as Canada, USA or even Australia. The world is a small place as far as Scouting is concerned. We give in most cases parents more than twelve months notice of the big camps to save up or even open a savings account with the centre. The two Scout sections at 1PSC do get plenty UK camps to go to. Each camp generally has a theme such as a Patrol Camp or a hiking camp, or sports camp. We do camp all year round so each Scout will need a good quality sleeping bag and sleeping mat. Scouting is about being with friends, work as part of a team, participating fully in the adventure and opportunities of life that we offer all our bys and girls here at 1PSC. If you are interested please check out availability for your chosen night and then get in touch. Its normally best to email the centre so paper work can be sorted ready for parent/guardian to fill in. The first night at 1PSC is FREE all is explained at the parent meeting. No uniform is needed at this stage.
