As many of you know I run the Family Hiking Group (FHG), each year I try to have a big hike something to train for. In 2010 that challenge is to be the Yorkshire Three Peaks. The hike will be open to Scouts too however I need to know you've prepared for such a challenge and completed several hikes before then from 8 to 25 miles. Your training can be done with family, friends or better still the FHG as all the hikes in 2010 are aimed to build you up for the challenge. You will need the right equipment such as hiking boots and a full set of waterproofs. See the kit list on the FHG, I'll also need a full back up team and hill walkers who can hike one or two of the hills. So please get in touch. As yet I'm unsure how much it will cost because I might have to hire a mini bus or if parents can take the Scouts to the start of the hike for a 06:30 start then great. I can not accept responsibility to parents who take wish to take part in the event with their Scout. I'm running lot of FREE hikes from 1PSC for Scouts hoping to go but can't make the training hikes with the FHG. Please keep an eye on the webpage for these hikes as they are all part of you training. About the Hike It's a 25-27 mile circular challenge hike, the Three Peaks of Yorkshire normally starts and finishes at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, visiting the three highest peaks in Yorkshire - Pen-y-ghent (691m), Whernside (728m), and Ingleborough (723m) - in that order. The total distance may vary slightly, as there are a few minor route options, but for most the walk will be just under 25 miles, visiting Ribblehead and Chapel-Le-Dale.
Although hikers will often not be too far from civilization, this long hike is still demanding, and is not a way marked route. Map and compass skills will be required by the leaders, especially when navigating over the Moss, and on the summits if visibility is poor. The total climb is some 5,200 feet, and the footpaths can be very wet and boggy in some places, rugged and rocky in others. Some sections are on fast country roads so there is an element of risk. At this stage please get in touch to discuss and confirm you'd like to give it a go. More details will soon be added to this page as I finalize the arrangements. ..................................................................................... Event:
Hiking Camp This camp is for Wednesday Scouts only, all are in tents and will have to cook their own meals on the Trangias. We arrive Friday evening by mini bus and set up camp. Saturday after breakfast we head out for hike to return to camp for dinner and free time. Sunday we break camp and head off to a local swimming pool for a quick dip before heading home. Your Scout will need sturdy footware, a full set of waterproofs for an English summer! Sleeping bag and Mat. A full kit list will be provided nearer the time. Those who've been out hiking with Skip will get priority. Because we intend to hire a mini bus places are limited so early booking is essential. .....................................................................................
Expedition:
Offshore Sailing to HOLLAND LAST FEW PLACES After the huge success of the 2009 Offshore Sailing experience, I've decided to go bigger and better and run a 9 night sailing experience. This expedition is also open to one CRB cleared parent per Scout although that is optional, Scouts can attend without a parent. Those parents wishing to go but haven't had a Scout CRB clearance you have time to get one done if you hurray so please don't delay. We set sail out of Whitby Harbour to sail down the east coast of Britain to about Harwich when we make the two day sailing across the North Sea to Holland. We will have some shore time to enjoy the area and hopefully hire bikes for a couple of days cycling sightseeing. On board you will be part of the crew and must help sail the boat from steering and navigation to setting the sails. The night crossing will mean round the clock sailing so night shifts for all will be needed. Cooking is also compulsory for all but don't panic you will not be expected to make any fancy meals. After a days sailing most will eat anything put in front of us! Though I'm unsure how many this expedition will attract I do hope to charter two yachts like the one in the picture so we can hold daily races to add to the fun of crossing the North Sea. If you know you intend to go please e-mail the centre during the holidays on onepsc@live.co.uk asap It's an amazing opportunity for all our Scouts and adults alike. The last weekend offshore sailing we did was an amazing experience that I can safely say no one will ever forget. Not included in the price is transport to Whitby, Scouts that have difficulty getting to Whitby but want to go please speak to your Scout Leader. All accommodation is in mixed bunked rooms. All sailing safety equipment is included. You must be able to pack light as there's no wardrobes for clothing. It all goes on your bunk bed! Limited places, further details will be handed out once you've secured your booking. £50 non returnable deposit secures an Explorer & Scout place. Adult deposits are non- returnable only after the names have been drawn from a hat. Full final payment by the end of June please, can you all keep to the payment dates as detailed in the following confirmation letter. ..................................................................................... Event:
Group Camp The date is set the final destination hasn't been decided therefore the cost is yet to be set. We've decided to try elsewhere for a change. This is our main camp of the year and is open to all sections. Beaver Scouts will come along for hte day. Scouts camping will need a sleeping bag and sleeping mat. Though it's all in the process of getting sorted we are now taking deposits and names .....................................................................................
